Tusker Construction is a Knysna based operation established in 1996, its owners having been actively involved in the South African construction industry since 1987, and in Knysna since 1990.
Tusker is owned and run by Brett Holton and Johan Slabbert who are both approaching 60. Brett studied at University of Cape Town (B.Sc. Building Management) and Johan studied at Cape Town Technikon (Diploma Construction Supervision). Greg Holtzhauzen is our senior site General Foreman, he and Brett have come a long way since Greg was employed as a carpenter for the construction of a Wild Coast Resort Hotel back in 1990.
So collectively among Brett, Johan and Greg we have 96, (yes, almost 100!) years of experience. In a small town like Knysna where word travels fast (especially bad word!), the solid reputation built up by Tusker over 25 years is jealously guarded and we go to great lengths to ensure it is preserved.
There are many homebuilders about who are excellent at the technical aspects of construction. Allied to the absolute necessity of technical competence in “building” per se - as important are overall management and communication skills, vital for the successful hand over of modern homes and their complex components which often involve many and varied specialists. Management of these specialists is critical as their combined inputs are usually, monetarily speaking, far more valuable than the actual bricks, mortar and timber of construction. Long ago we realised that this was particularly important in the holiday town of Knysna where clients are almost certainly far away during the construction of their dream homes.
From day one our motto has been “professional delivery - top quality”, not deviating from this objective has left us with many successfully completed projects and happy clients, many of whom we remain firm friends with today.
Most of our work is in the luxury residential bracket, more often than not we work with one of the local Architects who are appointed to supervise the project from inception to fruition. We have however frequently worked very successfully on contracts where the Architect has taken on a diminished role for whatever reason, we have the management skills to marry all the technical, administrative and cost aspects which are part and parcel of any contract of substance.
Tusker have been members of The Master Builders Association (MBA) since 1996 and also members of NHBRC since their role was gazetted in 2000.
Brett has been on the MBA (South Cape) Executive Committee since 2012 and is currently its Chairman.
Over the years Tusker has developed special long term relationships with the best of local suppliers and subcontractors - we value these relationships and fully understand that in order for them to be mutually successful, performance in any long term relationship needs to come from both sides.
As potential stakeholders in Knysna will quickly come to terms with, to ensure the long term sustainability of our town and its communities, it is imperative to make every reasonable effort to support local labour, initiatives and business. We always keep this in mind during our endeavours.
